Paper Industries

"Quality of paper" depends on several key characteristics that define its suitability for specific uses—whether for writing, printing, packaging, or industrial use. Here's a breakdown of important qualities of paper:

🧾 1. GSM (Grams per Square Meter)

  • Definition: Weight of the paper.

  • Example: 70 GSM (standard notebook paper), 100-120 GSM (letterheads), 300+ GSM (card stock).

  • Impact: Heavier GSM means thicker and often stronger paper.

📏 2. Thickness / Caliper

  • Definition: Actual thickness of the paper measured in microns or millimeters.

  • Related to: GSM, but not always the same (depends on density).

  • Use: Important in packaging and printing (e.g., postcards, brochures).

3. Brightness and Whiteness

  • Brightness: Reflective quality of blue light.

  • Whiteness: Reflects the true color of the paper (e.g., cool or warm white).

  • Higher brightness: Better for printing vivid colors.

🧪 4. Opacity

  • Definition: How much light passes through the paper.

  • High opacity: Less see-through, good for double-sided printing.

🧷 5. Strength

  • Types:

    • Tear strength – Resistance to tearing.

    • Burst strength – Pressure the paper can take before bursting.

    • Tensile strength – Pulling strength.

  • Use: Important in packaging, books, and industrial applications.

🌿 6. Surface Finish

  • Types:

    • Coated (Glossy, Matte): Smooth, used in brochures, magazines.

    • Uncoated: Rougher feel, absorbs more ink, used in regular books and writing.

  • Calendered paper: Machine-smoothed for a better finish.

🖨️ 7. Printability

  • Good ink absorption (without spreading).

  • Even surface for clear images and text.

💧 8. Moisture Content

  • Ideal: ~4–6%.

  • Too much = paper curls.

  • Too little = becomes brittle.

♻️ 9. Eco-Friendliness

  • Recycled content.

  • Acid-free paper for longer shelf life (archival).

  • Sustainably sourced (FSC/PEFC certification).

📦 10. Application-Specific Attributes

Use Preferred Qualities
Office Printing 70–100 GSM, high brightness, good opacity
Packaging High burst/tear strength, 200+ GSM
Magazines/Brochures Glossy coated, high brightness
Books Uncoated, good opacity, moderate GSM
Art/Drawing Textured surface, heavy GSM, acid-free
